About the laboratory

The Laboratory for Electricity Networks and Devices (LEON) has a long tradition of research in the field of electricity in Slovenia. In the early 1990s, in cooperation with the Siemens Network Planning Department in Germany, we started pioneering work on the use of digital simulations in power system analysis. What was received with great scepticism at the time is now taken for granted. The detailed analysis of various power system problems using state-of-the-art simulation software remains the main activity of the laboratory.

Teaching work at undergraduate and postgraduate level covers the analysis of power networks and installations, power transmission and distribution, power quality and high-voltage engineering.

Scientific research and professional work is mainly focused on green transition, smart grids and compensation devices. We carry out studies for transmission and distribution network operators and large industrial customers in the areas of network planning, the integration of renewable sources and electric vehicles, and the management of modern compensation devices in transmission and distribution networks. The laboratory’s researchers have developed close international cooperation through participation in European projects.

In addition to scientific excellence, the core vision of the laboratory is to translate solutions into practice and to support the technological development of the Slovenian electrical energy sector.
