Laboratory of Lighting and Photometry

About the Laboratory

The Laboratory of Lighting and Photometry is one of the oldest Slovenian measurement laboratories. It was established in 1921 as part of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the then Technical Faculty.

Research, educational and professional work in the laboratory takes place in two closely connected fields. The first field is lighting. We deal with research of light sources and luminaires and their use. In recent years, the development of energy-efficient luminaires with light-emitting diodes (LED) and other modern light sources, as well as the use of natural light for indoor illumination of spaces, has been particularly актуal. In addition, we design lighting systems and perform calculations of illuminance and luminance in indoor and outdoor spaces. We are also consultants to practically all major Slovenian companies engaged in lighting.

The second field of work is photometry – the measurement of light as perceived by the human eye. In the laboratory, we perform practically all photometric measurements: integrating measurement of luminous flux, directional and goniophotometric measurement of luminous intensity, measurement of illuminance and luminance with portable instruments and with spectroradiometers. These also enable measurements of the spectral content of light, the colour of light and the colour rendering index. The laboratory also performs calibrations of luminance and illuminance meters and develops photometric measuring equipment for its own needs and for clients.

Students can attend lectures and carry out exercises in the laboratory in various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of lighting and light engineering. They can also prepare a diploma thesis or seminar paper in this field. They are also invited to join us in research and project work.
