Higher education teachers: Mihalič Rafael
Credits: 5
Semester: winter
Subject code: 64689

Subject description

  • The condition for attending the study course is enrollment in the 3rd year.
  • The condition to perform the exam is to accomplish laboratory exercises

Content (Syllabus outline):

Normal and abnormal conditions in electric power systems (EPS), current overloading and voltage stress in an EPS, importance of identification of current and voltage stress, determination of pfase-to-phase and phase-to-earth parameters applying symmetrical components, simplified calculation applying the method of relative voltage drops, determination of characteristic pfase-to-phase and phase-to-earth quantities, neutral point earthing, its impact on earth faults and switching overvoltages, basic principles of fault currents disconnection, basics of dynamic phenomena ocurring in fault events, basics of determination of EPS elements ratings on the basis of fault currents.

Objectives and competences:

Students get acquainted with the consequences of disturbances in an EPS, with their impact on EPS operation and the importance of knowledge of short quantities for the design and development of elements of a power system network. Further they learn the method of calculating short-circuit variables according to the standards and simplified method of calculation, which allows a quick assessment of short-circuit currents. They take cognizance of the influence of EPS grounding on consequences of disturbances and the basic principles for the elimination of defective parts of EPSs. Finally, the basics of dynamic phenomena during faults and the baics of EPS's elements sizing, are learned.

Intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge about the consequences of disturbance appearance in EPS, the ability of fault current calculation, understanding of basic principles for elimination of defective parts of an EPS, knowledge regarding basic physical mechanisms of the dynamics of fault currents, principles of dimensioning of power system elements according to the fault currents.
