Systems and Control Design

Subject description

Presentation of control design purposes, control structures and cyclic control design approach

Survey of basic control system presentations (mathematical and graphical), transformations between them and analysis

Computer aided analysis and design using MATLAB with Simulink and Control System Toolbox

Description of control design quality criterion in time and frequency domain

Presentation of important control design structures and methods (on-off controllers, PID controllers, PID – tuning, root – locus analysis, Routh’s criterion of stability, lead and lag controller design in frequency domain, optimization using simulation)

Case studies of control design using laboratory pilot plants

The subject is taught in programs

Objectives and competences

Course goals are:

  • to present the reasons for the realization of system control (open and closed – loop),
  • to present the extend usage of control systems and the multidisciplinary nature of this scientific field,
  • to describe basic control algorithms of continuous systems,
  • to present cyclic procedure of control design,
  • to present the usage of MATLAB with Simulink and Control System Toolbox in the field of computer aided control design.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, homeworks, laboratory exercises, possibility of cooperation in seminar and project student's work, participation in excursions visiting industrial enterprices

Expected study results

After the successful completion of the exam students should be able to:

  • explain the reasons for feedback control design,
  • explain expected influence of proportional controller to close – loop system operation by root locus approach,
  • tune PID – controller,
  • design lead and lag controller,
  • analyse close – loop system behaviour after controller design,
  • use MATLAB with Simulink and Control System Toolboxom to support the described activities.
