Subject description

a) measurement methods (measurement of electrical and non-electrical physical quantities; differential and zero method; replacement and exchange method; compensation and bridge method; methods of analogy, counting and repetition)

b) modelling of measurement processes (measurement system of zero, first and second order; practical examples)

c) measurement instrumentation (history, classical and modern measurement instruments)

d) basics of probability theory and information theory in measurement (introduction to errors and uncertainty, statistical distributions, measurement signals)

e) computerized measurements (introduction to the measurement automation, hardware, sampling, analysis of acquired measurement signals)

f) software in measurement processes (introduction to software usage in measurements, data acquisition, processing and presentation of results, typical errors)

The subject is taught in programs

Objectives and competences

The objective of the course Measurement methods and instrumentation is to familiarize students with awareness and knowledge regarding measurement methods and instrumentation. The course contains basic

methods of modelling measurement processes. The student researches requirements regarding choice of measurement equipment in the relation with specific measurement problem. Within the course, modern measurement instrumentation and detailed understanding of probability theory and information theory in measurement science is presented. Acquired knowledge is used to identify key parameters of quality assurance in industrial processes related to measurements. The student is informed about basis of computer data acquisition, processing and presentation of measurements

Teaching and learning methods

In scope of the lectures the theoretical background on particular subjects related to measurement methods and instrumentation together with presentation of simple practical examples is given. A complete study material is available to the students.

Practical work is being performed in the laboratory environment, and is accomplished in steps acquainting students with the problem and instrumentation. Project group is consisted of two or three students who accomplish the measurements of electrical quantities. At the end of semester, students report on their results.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Identify basic terms regarding measurement methods and instrumentation within technical quality
  • Understand how modern measurement instrumentation has been made (measurement principles, choosing appropriate measurement instrumentation for the industrial problem)
  • Analyse basic technical quality items and suggest solutions
  • Measure and calculate basic electrical quantities (current, voltage, resistance, frequency, power, …)
