Communication Systems

Subject description

The course Communication Systems covers fundamental concepts in the field of information and communication systems, emphasizing the importance of digital transformation in modern society. Students will become acquainted with the role of users and providers of information and communication services, various services and content, and their applications.

Special attention is given to the model of the communication channel and the processes of digital data transmission. Throughout the course, students will gain a foundational understanding of communication layers, stacks, protocols, and protocol units, with the OSI reference model and TCP/IP stack serving as key components for understanding the operation and design of network systems.

Practical examples and the operation of key systems for providing communication services, including Ethernet, wireless and mobile communication networks, and internet systems, will also be presented. Furthermore, the course will cover the basics of web applications and technologies, the concept of the Internet of Things, and practical examples of its use.

Additionally, basics of cloud services and cybersecurity will be discussed, providing students with a comprehensive insight into the complex and dynamic field of communication systems.

Objectives and competences

The objective of the course is to introduce fundamental knowledge about operation and application of information and communicaton systems.

The course combines theoretical background with practical applications and real-world examples. The topics build an integral whole, which is of interest and necessary for all students of electrical engineering and multimedia. At the same time it facilitates involvement in professional subjects on information and communicaton technologies and multimedia in the continuation of the study.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures for theoretical aspects,

laboratory exercises and team-work for real-case scenarios and problem solving through project work. Elearning. Study visits and invited lecturers.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

– list key technologies in wired, wireless and mobile networks and describe their features,

-sketch the architectures and explain the operation of IP based internet systems, GSM mobile network and WLAN,

-differentiate among purposes of communication protocols at various layers of TCP/IP reference model,

-explain the concept and possible use cases of the internet of things and purpose of its’ building parts,

-configure a simple home wired- and wire-less network,

-evaluate effective transfer rates in various communication systems and calculate rates, times and volumes of transferred data.
