Subject description

Fundamental concepts of information-communication systems.

Fundamentals of communication systems. Digital data transmission. Architectures and models of telecommunication networks; access and core networks. Communication buses. Role of the selected systems in communication services provisioning: Ethernet, TCP/IP, wireless and mobile networks.

Fundamentals of Internet systems. Network layer, addressing, transport layer. IP networks, Internet applications. Fundamentals of Web and Web technologies.

Overview of information-communication service applications, World Wide Web. Fundamentals of information and communication security.

The subject is taught in programs

Objectives and competences

The objective of the course is to introduce fundamental knowledge about operation and application of information-communication systems. This knowledge is  necessary for all the future technical engineers and represents a part of general education of an engineer in the information society.

The topics build an integral whole, which is of interest and necessary for all students of electrical engineering. At the same time it facilitates involvement in professional subjects on information and communicaton technologies in the continuation of the study, where some of the topics are covered in detail.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures for theoretical aspects, laboratory exercises and team-work for real-case scenarios and problem solving through project work. Part of the pedagogical process will be carried out with the help of ICT technologies and the possiblities they offer. Study visits and invited lecturers.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

– list key wired broadband access network technologies and describe them,

-sketch the architectures and explain the operation of IP based internet systems, GSM mobile network, WLAN and communication buses,

-differentiate among purposes of communication protocols at various layer of TCP/IP reference model,

-configure a simple home wired- and wire-less network,

-evaluate effective transfer rates in various communication systems and calculate rates, times and volumes of transferred data.
