Information Systems

Subject description

Fundamental concepts of information systems, their importance and usage: information, data, knowledge, data sources. Ways of data, information, and knowledge representation: basic and complex data types, meta data, relations between data. Infrastructure of information systems: hardware and software, data storage, communication devices and communication networks, security devices and equipment, virtualisation and cloud computing. Data storage: databases, data servers, data warehouses.
Access to data: direct data access, data access interfaces, client/server remote access, web applications.
Queries: query languages, key words, text search. Data protection.
Tools for data manipulation: tools for local and remote databases, tools for local, remote and virtual data servers, tools for manipulation of data over the web.

The subject is taught in programs

Objectives and competences

Presentation of fundamental knowledge and skills from the field of information systems, which are a part of general education and learning of an information society engineer. Review of existing and up-to-date information systems. Insight into methods and means for data access, data search, and data processing. Use of different tools for data maintenance, data management, data display and data query.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and laboratory tutorials, individual work.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • define properties and parameters of information systems,
  • devise information system infrastructure,
  • put up a basic infrastructure for information systems,
  • manage  information system infrastructure,
  • design database data model,
  • execute basic operations on databases,
  • select appropriate tools for database and data management.
