Electrical EngineeringPhD
PhD programme Electrical Engineering.
Electrical engineering makes the world go round
The PhDl Programme in Electrical Engineering is a third cycle programme according to the Bologna scheme and inextricably links studies with scientific research and development work. The main focus of the programme is on the student’s independent creative research work, guided by a mentor.
What does the study programme look like?
The study programme takes four years and consists of 240 credit points (KT). The study requirements are assessed according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which provides a basis for international student exchange in countries that use the same or comparable credit system.
The programme gives preference to electives over compulsory forms of study. In order to adequately cover the increasingly diversified field of modern electrical engineering, the range of study subjects is large and varied. The electives give students the opportunity to plan their own research careers early and to pursue the needs of future employers. At the same time, we ensure an appropriate range of education through compulsory seminars and the inclusion of generic electives (transferable skills). The programme offers mobility both in the context of organised study and individual research.
During the course of the studies, the student is expected to actively participate in national and international scientific and professional workshops and conferences. In doing so, the student develops skills in scientific communication, critical evaluation of the achievements of others and the results of his/her own research. The essential duties of a doctoral student include the proposal and the producing of a doctoral dissertation. In the doctoral thesis, in addition to demonstrating competence in scientific thinking and research skills, the candidate shall also demonstrate original contributions to science by publishing at least one article in a scientific journal with an impact factor.
Upon the completion of the studies, students are awarded the title of a PhD.
What are the main objectives of the programme?
- To integrate studies and research and development,
- to develop a scientific approach, acquire a scientific way of thinking,
- to promote a deeper understanding of electrical engineering and how it fits into the broader scientific context,
- to promote the pursuit and mastery of state-of-the-art processes and technologies,
- to develop communication skills, the ability to report on scientific research achievements, and knowledge transfer,
- to develop a fair and critical attitude when assessing the achievements of others and the results of their own work,
- to train PhDs for creative research and development work in the field of electrical engineering and beyond.
What competences do students gain from the programme?
The general competences acquired through the programme are:
- the ability to carry out creative and independent scientific research and development work in the field of electrical engineering and beyond,
- the ability to pursue and correctly assess the latest developments in the wider field of electrical engineering,
- a critical attitude towards the results of your own research and development work,
- the ability to communicate in an active professional manner, both orally and in writing,
- the ability to work as part of a team with experts from different disciplines,
- professional, environmental and social responsibility.
The subject-specific competences acquired through the programme are:
- upgrading basic electrical engineering skills,
- the ability to carry out creative independent scientific research and development work in the following areas
- electricity, photovoltaics
- electronics, microelectronics, optoelectronics, microsensors and nanostructures
- mechatronics, embedded systems, intelligent automation systems and robotics
- metrology and quality assurance
- biomedical engineering and informatics
- information, communication and multimedia technologies
- complementing skills in complementary fields and general skills, especially communication skills in development and research and beyond, on the basis of the principle of optionality and mobility.
Three-year PhD programme
The doctoral programme in Electrical Engineering is a three-year, 180-credit (KT), third cycle programme according to the Bologna system. The study requirements are evaluated according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which provides a basis for international exchange of students in countries that use the same or comparable credit system. The study programme in Electrical Engineering inseparably links studies with scientific research and development work. The main focus of the programme is on the student’s independent creative research work, guided by a mentor.
