Methods of data collection in official statistics:

  • Modern approaches in survey methodology and censuses.
  • Use of administrative sources.
  • Big data.
  • Integration of data from different sources.
  • Specifics of data collection by domain (e.g. business statistics, balance of payment statistics, population statistics).

Data processing in official statistics:

  • Sampling.
  • Editing.
  • Estimation.
  • Seasonal adjustment.

Objectives and competences

Course objective is to introduce students to methods and tools of official statistics, with emphasis on recent findings and open issues.

Competences:

  • Use of methods and tools of official statistics at a basic level;
  • Ability to critically evaluate relevance and impact of methods and tools on the quality in official statistics.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, labwork, assignments, homework, presentations.

Part of the pedagogical process will be carried out with the help of ICT technologies and the opportunities they offer.

Expected study results

Students will be able to design adequate basic methodologies for collection, processing and dissemination of official statistics data and use suitable statistical methods and other techniques in the statistical production process. They will develop a critical and creative attitude to modern methods and tools of official statistics by taking into account requirements and specifics of statistical domains and scope of available statistical methods.
