Sound signals. Capture, properties and digitalization.

Image and video. Capture, properties and digitalization.

Transformations of sound and image signals.

Efficient storage and notation of digital data and lossless compression methods.

Digital sound, image and video notation and compression.

Multimedia content management.

Multimedia descriptors. Multimodality of information. Alternative content search and retrieval. Natural user interfacing.

Objectives and competences

Course explains the structure of multimedia systems ensures understanding of digital sound, graphics, image and video notation. Based on examples, students will get familiar with properties of standardized digital media content formats like sound, image and video.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, demonstrations, practical laboratory work.

Expected study results

Understanding of multimedia content formats, understanding of format specifics in real environment.

Application of standardised digital media content formats.

Understanding of digital notation of sound, image and video and exploitation of human perception of multimedia signals.

Understanding of multimedia content management tools and utilities.
