Introduction to communication electronics

Subject description

Linear circuits and signals: a linear system, signal types, signal characteristics, presentation of signals composing signals. Electrical circuits with concentrated elements: properties, theorems, energy, power. The analysis of linear circuits and systems. Semiconductor fundamentals: the basic elements of bipolar and CMOS technology. Analog electronic circuits, the building blocks of analog communication circuits. Digital electronic circuits: the building blocks of digital communication circuits. Signal integrity. Basics of AD and DA converters. The role and importance of standards of communication and multimedia circuits and systems.

Objectives and competences

Understanding the basics of operation of electronic circuits in telecommunication and multimedia systems from the perspective of the transmission and signal processing and basic approaches to analyzing analog and digital systems. Understanding the functionality and familiarity with selected analog and digital electronic circuits. Knowledge of modern technologies and standards, Understanding specifications and selection of appropriate solutions on the market. The course provides a basis for understanding the physical layer of communication systems.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Use theorems from circuit theory
  • Design of linear circuits
  • Analysis of linear and nonlinear circuits built of lumped elements
  • Synthesis of linear circuit from system specifications
  • Design of simple nonlinear circuits in bipolar and CMOS technologies
  • Design of simple digital circuits in CMOS technology
  • Simulations of simple analog and digital communication circuits and evaluate the results of the simulations
  • Design of simple analog circuits using operational amplifiers
  • Understanding the meaning of integrity of the signals
  • Use of A/D and D/A converters in communication circuits.
