The subject is taught in programs

Objectives and competences

Students will obtain an overview of operation of power systems and their planning. This course presents methods for power flow calculation, explains optimal power flows and the optimization objectives. Students will become familiar with the role of system reserves, ancillary services, the impact of energy markets on power system operation, concepts of reliable operation of power systems, security of supply. Also they will lean how to forecast the system loading – consumption, which approaches are available for power system planning, the activities within asset management and risk assessment, investments in new production and transmission equipment etc.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and exercises.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

– develop mathematical models of basic elements of electric power system (generator, load, line, transformer),

– calculate power flows through the network,

– assess power system reliability,

– develop mathematical models for economic feasibility assessment of investments in electric power systems,

– develop mathematical model for short- and long-term forecasting of production and consumption of electric energy and electricity prices,

– develop optimization models and selection of appropriate optimization method for mathematical problems in the field of power system planning,

– interpret basic principles of electric energy and ancillary service markets,

– evaluate basic mechanisms in the field of power system development and planning.
