Subject description

Power system operation, modeling of power system elements, methods for power flow calculation, optimal power flow calculation, active power and frequency control, reactive power and voltage control, ancillary service procurement, impact of energy markets on power system operation, power system reliability, security of supply.

Load forecasting, system reserve, power system planning methodologies, power system planning criteria, power system planning in market environment, environmental aspects in power system planning, power system economics, optimization methods, asset management.

Objectives

Students will obtain an overview of operation of power systems and their planning. This course presents methods for power flow calculation, explains optimal power flows and the optimization objectives. Students will become familiar with the role of system reserves, ancillary services, the impact of energy markets on power system operation, concepts of reliable operation of power systems, security of supply. Also they will lean how to forecast the system loading – consumption, which approaches are available for power system planning, the activities within asset management and risk assessment, investments in new production and transmission equipment etc.
