Signal processing procedures

Subject description

Introduction to digital signal processing and its applications: Signals, systems, signal processing methods, basic elements of a digital signal processing system, applications in multimedia and communication systems.

Discrete-Time Domain Signals: Sampling and quantisation, representation of signal sequence, discrete-time signals, the convolution sum, properties of convolution, impulse response, relation to the frequency response, algebra-difference equations.

Frequency Analysis Of Discrete-Time Signals: Fourier transform, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), time and frequency resolutions of a DFT, windows influence on signal spectrum, fast computation of the DFT: FFT,  Discrete Cosine Transform, pattern analysis, image compression.

Z Transform: Z-Transform basics, relation to Laplace and Fourier transforms, region of convergence (ROC), the properties of the z-Transform, system transfer functions, stability analysis, pole and zero in systems transfer function, inversion of the z-Transform,  applications and system design.

Digital Filters Design: FIR filters and properties. FIR filter design, windowing. IIR filter design, the bilinear transformation, pole-zero placement. Applications: communication systems, audio equalisers, noise reduction, image processing.

Objectives and competences

To inform students about the basic methods of digital signals and images processing, and the presentation of application areas of presented methods.

Teaching and learning methods

Oral content presentation with the implementation and demonstration.

Understanding the processes and tools for multimedia signal processing.
