Opis predmeta

In the introduction, we reveal the challenges and trends in photonics, highlight recent discoveries – the present and future of photonics, why we want to replace the electron with the photon

We then focus on the state-of-the-art in integrated photonics, or photonic integrated circuits. We will learn about the platforms and technologies available for photonic integrated circuits. We present possible applications. We will learn about the different components of photonic integrated circuits: optical waveguides, splitters, couplers, (de)multiplexers, integrated optical sources and detectors, modulators, filter structures. Demonstrate the technology available at the faculty and the possibilities of outsourcing chip fabrication.

In laboratory exercises, we design and run simulations of some integrated components and simple photonic circuits. We perform measurements on selected photonic circuits.

Cilji

The objectives of the course are to familiarize students with the state-of-the-art knowledge on photonics, especially on integrated photonics. We focus on integrated photonic circuits, fiber sensors and nanophotonic structures in photovoltaics. Students will learn theoretical background and practical issues in the design and application of the photonic devices.

Metode poučevanja in učenja

The lectures provide a theoretical background on nano(photonic) structures, practical examples are shown. In the practical work students will focus on design of simple photonic integrated circuits. They will also measure characteristics of selected (nano)photonic structures. A part of the educational process will be carried out by means of ICT technologies, employing options they offer.
