Laboratory of Control Engineering and Power Electronics

About the Laboratory

In cooperation with colleagues from the Department of Mechatronics, we are engaged in teaching and research in the fields of power electronics systems, microprocessor technology, and programmable controllers within mechatronics.

High dynamics, reliability, and high energy efficiency of a mechatronic system (such as anti-lock braking systems – ABS, positioning electric motor drives, etc.) can only be achieved through continuous intervention in the system (control). However, such control is not effective without sufficiently fast and accurate measurement of physical quantities and appropriately fast actuation through its executive element. Both are closely related to modern power converters and the associated control algorithms, which are integrated into larger systems via supervisory computer systems and programmable controllers.

Since mechatronic systems — in their smaller or larger forms — are encountered at every step, our work is reflected in continuously relevant research tasks and products:

  • static power converters for electric motor drives, precision generators of sinusoidal voltage and current, and process current sources for galvanotechnical processes. One of the important areas of activity is active power filters for power networks.
  • microcontroller systems developed for controlling processes in the above-mentioned power electronics applications. With these systems, we can control even the most demanding systems, such as sensorless control of an induction motor and fault detection during the operation of converters and machines.

All of the above is complemented by expertise in modern industrial controllers.

We conduct numerous courses within the study programmes Mechatronics (UN) and Energy Technology and Plant Automation (ETAP – VS), where students can expect a pleasant environment, high-quality lectures, and well-equipped laboratories for practical work and additional training.
