Laboratory of Biocybernetics

About the Laboratory

The Laboratory of Biocybernetics (LBK) was founded in 1963 by Acad. Prof. Dr. Lojze Vodovnik. From the very beginning, the work of LBK has focused on studying the interactions of electricity with biological systems. This broad research area in biomedical engineering includes both the application of beneficial effects in the treatment and diagnosis of various diseases and injuries, as well as the study of harmful effects on organisms.

Over the past three decades, the central focus of our scientific and professional development work has been electroporation — a versatile method for increasing cell membrane permeability, used in biomedicine (for tumor treatment, gene therapy, treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, etc.), as well as in food technology and biotechnology. LBK is among the world leaders in electroporation research and in the development of its applications; our scientific publications in this field have received more than 15,000 pure citations. This is achieved through a top-level interdisciplinary team of more than 30 researchers.

We study electroporation at different levels of complexity, from the molecular level through membranes and cells to tissues, and, in cooperation with medical institutions, also in preclinical and clinical studies. Our work includes analytical and numerical calculations and simulations, in vitro and in vivo experiments, the design of therapeutic approaches, as well as the development of devices for research and clinical work in these areas and information technologies to support clinical practice. The research areas and challenges are described in more detail on the LBK web portal under the “Research” section.

We carry out teaching activities at all three levels of study at our faculty — at the undergraduate level through courses in several electrical engineering study tracks, and at the master’s and doctoral levels primarily in biomedical engineering. The best students are offered employment at LBK after completing their master’s degree, along with funding for doctoral studies. Since 2003, we have organized the workshop and doctoral school Electroporation-Based Technologies and Treatments (EBTT), with more than 50 participants annually (over 1,000 different participants from 45 countries worldwide to date).
