Subject description

Introduction and motivation for the use of multimedia content. The advantages of multimedia content in digital form. Specific requirements from hardware and software to work with digital multimedia content. Text as a multimedia content: creation, use, tools for working with text as a multimedia content. Graphics and images: creating, capturing and their use, the comparison of vector and bitmap graphics. Record formats.

Sound: creating, capturing, processing and its use. Record formats and distribution.

Video: capturing and digitizing video, video editing, tools for working with video content. Formats of digital video recording and distribution. Basic concepts of working with animations with basics of interactivity. Combining various multimedia content in the final multimedia product with added elements of interactivity. Multimedia product development process from the development plan through the product design to the production of the product. Documentation required for the development of a multimedia product. Knowledge about content copyrights.

Objectives and competences

The objective of the course Multimedia content is to introduce students into comprehensive field of multimedia content, which includes text, graphics, images, video, sound and animation. The goal of the course is to understand the concepts needed to master the use of standard software tools for creating, editing, integration and distribution of digital multimedia content.

Teaching and learning methods

The lectures provide theoretical background on selected topics together with simple practical demonstrations. A complete study material is available online.

Practical work is being performed in the laboratory environment. Individual projects are based on selected topics and presented by students.

Expected study results

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
Understand theoretical foundations of digital multimedia.

Apply basic concepts in various creative fields, editing and use of multimedia content.

Use of modern tools for editing and producing multimedia content.

Design multimedia content with the end user in mind.

Integrate individual multimedia elements into the final product.

Know basics of digital multimedia content distribution and content protection and rights of the content use.
