Superior Engineering unveils the next-generation electric race car Triglav

The student team Superior Engineering, which includes many students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana, has unveiled the latest generation of its electric Formula Student race car at Ljubljana Castle. Named Triglav, this year’s vehicle marks a major development milestone for the team and signals the start of the 2026 Formula Student competition season.

The vehicle unveiling, known as the rollout, symbolically concluded several months of design, development and manufacturing, while opening a new phase of the project focused on testing and race preparation. On this occasion, the team thanked its supporters, mentors, partners and community members whose expertise and commitment make one of the University of Ljubljana’s largest interdisciplinary student projects possible.

Triglav features a lighter design and numerous technical improvements

The new race car is the result of carefully refining proven solutions through extensive simulations, analysis of previous seasons and intensive engineering work. The team’s primary objectives were to reduce weight, improve reliability, enhance vehicle dynamics, and simplify assembly and maintenance.

Compared to last year’s model, Triglav is 30 kilograms lighter, representing a reduction of more than 15% of the vehicle’s total weight, while maintaining the stability and key strengths of the original design. One of the most significant upgrades is a new battery pack featuring high-performance pouch cells, enabling further weight reduction.

The team also introduced major improvements to the chassis. By using advanced carbon-fibre materials, they reduced the number of carbon-fibre layers while maintaining the required torsional stiffness. A custom-made carbon-fibre driver’s seat, together with further refinements to the aerodynamics and suspension, also contributes to the vehicle’s lower weight, greater efficiency and improved handling.

An interdisciplinary environment for developing practical engineering skills

Superior Engineering is one of the largest student engineering projects at the University of Ljubljana. The team brings together more than 70 students from different faculties, combining expertise in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, materials engineering, aerodynamics, organisation and project management.

Students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering play an important role in developing the electric drivetrain, battery system, measurement systems, control algorithms, software and data analysis. Their involvement allows them to apply theoretical knowledge in practice while working on a highly complex system whose individual subsystems must function together reliably under demanding conditions.

The project also has significant educational value because it is built on knowledge transfer between generations. Experienced team members and alumni mentor younger students, while the newcomers contribute fresh ideas, new perspectives and additional development momentum. This creates an environment where technical expertise is combined with responsibility, perseverance, teamwork and effective problem-solving.

Testing and fine-tuning begin

Following the rollout, the team enters the crucial testing phase ahead of the competition season. Over the coming weeks, the focus will be on validating the vehicle’s reliability, evaluating the performance of individual systems and allowing the drivers to become fully familiar with the car.

The team aims to complete at least 300 kilometres of testing before the first competition. These test kilometres are not only important for verifying durability but also for collecting data, comparing real-world results with simulations and progressively optimising the vehicle’s setup. Throughout testing, the team will monitor the performance of both the electrical and mechanical systems, evaluate the suspension, validate the control algorithms and identify further opportunities for improvement.

The objective is to ensure that Triglav arrives at its first competition as a reliable, thoroughly tested and well-prepared race car capable of meeting demanding technical inspections and performing successfully in the dynamic events against the world’s leading student teams.

Team leader Lan Jenčič commented: “We developed the car with a clear objective: to preserve what had already proven successful while improving the areas with the greatest potential for further development. We are proud of the work accomplished by the entire team and look forward to testing our solutions against the world’s best Formula Student teams.”

This summer, Superior Engineering will compete in several international Formula Student events, where the team will test the quality of its engineering solutions, organisational capabilities and vehicle performance against top student teams from around the world.

  • Formula Student Spain: 1–7 August 2026, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Montmeló, Spain
  • Formula Student Alpe Adria: 18–23 August 2026, Velika Gorica, Croatia
  • Formula Student Poland: 25–29 August 2026, Autodrom Słomczyn, Poland (participation pending confirmation)
