Voice of FE – The Vocal Group of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering

The FE Vocal Group brings together students and staff of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering who enjoy performing Slovenian and international popular music from the rich choral repertoire — either a cappella or accompanied by the band kWh.

The FE Band is also composed of students and staff of the Faculty. The current lineup includes two saxophones, trumpet, keyboards, two guitars, bass guitar, and drums. The band primarily explores rock, funk, and jazz, performing both covers and original compositions.

Together, the band and the FE Vocal Group perform at Faculty events, graduation ceremonies, and award celebrations.

History and Beginnings of the Vocal Group and the kWh Band

The first choir at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was established in 2000 at the initiative of the then Dean, Prof. Tadej Bajd. The idea of a choir bringing together both staff and students had, however, been developing for quite some time.

At the first rehearsal on 18 May, three faculty members — Julijan Stanič, Franc Bergelj, and Dejan Križaj — gathered alongside conductor Mr. Marko Tiran. New members soon joined, and on 8 June 2000, the Chamber Choir of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering performed at the graduation ceremony in the Assembly Hall of the University of Ljubljana, singing Zdravljica and Gaudeamus Igitur.

Activities and Repertoire

Over the years, the choir grew stronger, with membership fluctuating around sixteen singers, primarily faculty staff. Although the ensemble was mixed, it maintained a male-choir repertoire for a long time, reinforced by female altos singing in the tenor range.

The choir regularly performed at graduation ceremonies, freshman welcome events, New Year gatherings, and charity concerts. In 2003 and 2005, it also released two CDs.

New Energy – The FE Vocal Group

In 2012, the choir was revitalised with the establishment of the FE Vocal Group, which welcomed many female students and staff members. The repertoire shifted toward mixed-voice arrangements, often complemented by instrumental accompaniment.

The group was led by Marko Tiran until 2018, after which leadership was taken over by the young conductor Lovro Frelih.

Vocal-Instrumental Ensemble

In collaboration with the student band kWh, a new vocal-instrumental ensemble was formed, continuing and expanding the rich tradition of singing and music-making at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

There has always been a strong presence of talented musicians among electrical engineering students, making the Faculty’s musical future bright and full of new opportunities.

The Beginning as an Experiment

The idea for the band emerged from an unusual question: How would an acoustic guitar sound in an anechoic chamber?

At the initiative of Igor Čarman, and with the support of sound engineer Samo Beguš, students playing various instruments joined the experiment — which quickly evolved into a true musical ensemble.

Early Line-ups and Recordings

Even before their first recording, the group had formed a classic rock-funk lineup featuring guitars, bass, percussion, and saxophone. Their first recording session in the anechoic chamber revealed strong potential, and the experiment soon grew into the official band of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The band’s name changed a few times before settling on the familiar and energetic kWh – kilowatt-hour.

Repertoire and Creativity

In the beginning, the band performed covers of pop and rock songs, later shifting toward funk and jazz. Rehearsals also gave rise to original compositions, among which the song “Roke so na tleh” (“Hands on the Ground”) became particularly well established.

They performed with enthusiasm — and audiences responded with equal excitement.

Support and Community

The kWh band has always enjoyed strong support from colleagues at the Faculty — from technical assistance and rehearsal spaces to encouragement at performances.

Together with the FE Vocal Group, the band regularly performs at Faculty events, graduation ceremonies, and other occasions, enriching the cultural and artistic life of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
