Co-financing of doctoral studies at the University of Ljubljana in the 2025/26 academic year
In the 2025/26 academic year, co-financing of tuition fees for doctoral study programmes at the University of Ljubljana will be available to all students who meet the eligibility criteria for co-financing. Students will be informed by the Faculty at which they are (or will be) enrolled whether they meet the conditions for co-financing and about the amount of co-financing.
Students will be notified of the amount of co-financing after enrolment in doctoral studies, expected in November, as the amount granted to each student depends not only on the funds allocated to the University of Ljubljana but also on the number of enrolled students who meet the eligibility criteria.
Being regularly employed or registered as unemployed with the Employment Service of the Republic of Slovenia does not exclude eligibility for co-financing. There is also no age limit for co-financing eligibility.
Progression to a higher year or exceptional extension of student status for justified reasons
In exceptional cases, a student may apply for enrolment in a higher year or for an exceptional extension of student status, provided that they have completed the compulsory components in accordance with the study programme and achieved the minimum number of ECTS credits for the current year, and can demonstrate justified reasons.
The minimum number of ECTS credits is determined by the Faculty’s regulations and may not be lower than 40 ECTS credits.
Justified reasons include:
- parenthood,
- prolonged illness of the student,
- exceptional family or social circumstances,
- recognised status of a person with special needs,
- active participation in top-level professional, cultural, or sporting events,
- active participation in the bodies of the University, and
- for international students, participation in the “Year Plus” programme.
The student must demonstrate that the reason listed above directly affected the fulfilment of their study obligations. The assessment of such applications is carried out by the Student Applications Committee.
Repetition of a year
Repetition of a year is permitted only once during the course of studies, in accordance with the applicable legislation and the Statute of the University of Ljubljana. Repetition also includes any change of study programme due to failure to meet obligations in the previous programme (transfer to another study programme or study track).
For re-enrolment in any year of a third-cycle (doctoral) study programme, students must contact the Doctoral Studies Coordinator.
To repeat a year, students are required to submit an application to the Scientific Research Committee in order to resolve matters related to tuition fee payment.
Requirements
-
Repetition of the first year requires completion of at least 10 ECTS credits from elective courses and 20 ECTS credits from seminars and research work.
-
Repetition of the second year requires completion of all study obligations of the first year and 30 ECTS credits of research work in the second year.
-
Repetition of the third year requires completion of all study obligations of the first and second years and 30 ECTS credits of research work in the third year.
Suspension of studies
If you do not meet the conditions for enrolment in a higher year or for repeating a year, but wish to continue your studies, you must register as a student on suspension.
By doing so, you will retain access to the STUDIS system and the ability to register for examinations.
