Internet systems

Course description

Internet – yesterday, today and tomorrow (what is the Internet, who manages the Internet, what is transmitted over the Internet, the amount of content on the Internet). The basic concepts of Internet networks (connectivity of different transmission technologies, Internet protocol stack, communication flow between users). Elements of Internet networks (network elements, terminal equipment, transmission technologies). Internet protocols (the concept of operation, network layer protocols, transport layer protocols, application protocols). Applications and services (content servers, email, network services servers, hosting).

Objectives and competences

This course is designed to give an overview of basic concepts of Internet networks and the operation of packet-switched systems. Understanding the basic building blocks of Internet networks; the basic mechanisms; network, transport and application protocols and services in Internet networks.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures for theoretical aspects,

laboratory exercises and team work for real-case scenarios and problem solving through team work. Elearning. Study visits and invited lecturers.

Intended learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
– list key technologies and applications of Internet networks,

– describe important network technologies and applications,

– describe the architecture of home, enterprise and operator networks,

– differentiate among functionalities of the layers of communication protocols,

– differentiate among functionalities of different protocols for network security provisioning,

– configure user, home and enterprise network devices for basic connectivity,

– configure a web server,

– compare concepts, architectures and functionalities of home, enterprise and operator networks.
