Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics

Members of the Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics (LPVO) carry out research and development activities in the fields of photovoltaics, optoelectronics and electronics.

In the field of photovoltaics, they research and develop different types of solar cells, photovoltaic modules, controllers and systems, focusing on new technological solutions. They are interested in the limits of solar cells, photovoltaic modules and complete systems. The state-of-the-art laboratory paves the way for the development of the most promising photovoltaic technologies and builds on internationally established simulation tools for the optical and electrical analysis of arbitrary semiconductor structures, solar cells, modules and complete solar power plants. State-of-the-art measurement equipment enables electrical, optical and optoelectronic characterisation to be carried out, including outdoor testing. Research in optoelectronics focuses on thin-film photodetectors for colour and UV light detection and biomolecules. In the field of electronics, they are intensively researching stand-alone position sensors, including accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetic compasses and GPS modules, and developing custom embedded electronic systems.

LPVO members are heavily involved in domestic and international research projects and actively collaborate with domestic and foreign companies. They collaborate with renowned research institutions abroad. In the last ten years, they have participated in seven European projects, one of which they coordinated. They regularly publish their research results in renowned specialised journals and regularly present them at international conferences.
In the five-year period 2012-2016, LPVO has graduated 100 Bachelors, 3 Specialists, 5 Masters and 9 PhDs. The laboratory is open to all students who wish to further their knowledge or put their ideas into practice. Based on signed inter-laboratory cooperation agreements in the field of photovoltaics and optoelectronics, students can undertake further training through short or longer exchanges at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, at Loughgborough University in England or at Colorado State University in the USA.
