Laboratory of Electrical Machines

The Electrical Machinery Laboratory carries out research on electrical machinery, such as transformers and chokes, and various types of rotary and linear motors, generators and actuators.

Theoretical research includes the development of mathematical models of classical and special electrical machines, studies of steady-state and transient phenomena, and the development and application of various numerical methods for the optimisation of magnetic and electrical conditions in these machines (finite element methods, finite difference methods, plane currents, alternating currents). The work of the Laboratory also covers the development of measurement methods and procedures for the testing of electrical machines, and the carrying out of measurements using modern measurement equipment.

In the field of special electrical machines, we try to find solutions where conventional machine designs do not meet the high demands of individual applications. Our work covers the development, optimisation and testing of high-speed and high-torque motors, high-speed linear actuators, special chokes, etc. Our expertise and powerful computer modelling and simulation software enable us to quickly and reliably analyse almost any electromagnetic device.

Current activities are mainly focused on research in the field of power transformers and chokes, where we are trying to find thermal models of these devices that better describe the thermal conditions in different operating states of these devices than the ones we have so far.

All students of higher professional and university studies have the opportunity to be actively involved in the research work of the laboratory. This is most often in the form of seminar papers and theses, but all students who wish to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge during their studies by participating in ongoing research projects are welcome. In addition, students can use the laboratory and most of the equipment for their own research, practical work or further education, by arrangement.
