Laboratory ofInformation Technologies

The Information Technologies Laboratory is headed by Prof. Dr. Sašo Tomažič.

The other members of the laboratory are assistant professors, senior lecturers, assistant professors, young researchers, and either national or international students pursuing a diploma or PhD.

In the subjects covered in the Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, we place great emphasis on practical training, which students complete through laboratory exercises. These include work on computers using various mathematical tools (e.g. Matlab and MathCad), while the rest of the laboratory exercises are carried out on specialised modules that can be used to build many telecommunications systems.

In addition to their compulsory work, students can join us in the lab to work on their thesis or even work with us as a young researcher. Research work in the laboratory covers several different areas: IP networks, mobile communications (mobile channel characterisation, spread spectrum systems, GSM and UMTS), quality of service assurance in communication networks, security in communications, Internet telephony, frequency-time transformations, software development for communication protocols (xDSL), adaptive signal processing, analysis of digital transmission lines (theoretical and available capacity), speech processing - real-time speech coding, development of Esperanto, an intermediate language for multilingual translation on the World Wide Web, image processing (MRI, image compression), personal communication systems and simulation of communication networks.

In addition to our teaching activities, we participate in national and international research projects and industry-related projects. In 2007, at the 2nd Slovenian Innovation Forum, the idea "multilingual web with e-speranto" was presented among the 40 best innovations in Slovenia. Since 2005, we have been organising the VIPSI-Slovenia international interdisciplinary conference every year. The main theme of the conference is quality of life and how engineers can influence its improvement.
