Electricity inin the human body

Electricity in the human body

Biomedical engineering - electrical engineering in medicine and biology.

  • Electrical activity of the heart
  • Electronics
  • ECG meter
  • Electroporation
  • Cell Biology Laboratory

At the workshop Electricity in the human body we will learn about the electrical nature of the heart, muscles and nerves and try electrical stimulation to help muscles when they are not working properly. Using practical circuits, we will learn the basics of electronics and build an amplifier to signal the electrical activity of the heart to measure our first electrocardiogram. With a teaching kit of electronic components, we will be able to continue our exploration of the world of electronics at home. Next, we will learn how to handle cells in the biology lab. We will find out how electricity can affect cells. Under the microscope, we will observe how electrical 'shocks' affect the permeability of the cell membrane and thus introduce DNA molecules into the cells, making them fluorescent over time. We will investigate how DNA uptake can be further improved using nanoporous membranes and support our findings with computer simulations.
